Overview
This article explains the following deployment error:
Error: Create host error: Creating resource failed with exception: Out of host capacity.
This error indicates a temporary physical capacity shortage within the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) data center where the deployment was attempted.
The issue is related to hardware availability inside the selected OCI Availability Domain and does not indicate a problem with the Softdrive platform itself.
Applies To
- Softdrive Deployments
- OCI (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure)
- Dedicated Hosts
- New Host Provisioning
- Availability Domains (ADs)
Symptoms
- Deployment fails during host creation
- Host provisioning stops unexpectedly
- The following message appears:
Create host error: Creating resource failed with exception: Out of host capacity - Requested instance shape cannot be provisioned
Possible Causes
This issue is typically caused by temporary hardware exhaustion inside a specific Oracle Cloud Availability Domain.
Cloud infrastructure is highly scalable, but it still depends on finite physical hardware resources within each data center region.
Common causes include:
- High Demand
There is a temporary surge in customer demand for the specific OCI instance shape being requested. - Finite Hardware Inventory
The selected Availability Domain (AD) may have temporarily exhausted the physical hardware resources required for the requested host type. - Capacity Expansion Cycles
Oracle continuously expands infrastructure capacity, but temporary shortages may occur between hardware replenishment cycles. - Shape-Specific Availability
Some compute shapes may be more heavily utilized than others depending on regional demand.
This issue is temporary in most situations and often resolves automatically once capacity becomes available again.
Resolution
1. Wait and Retry the Deployment
In many cases, OCI capacity changes dynamically throughout the day as resources are released or redistributed.
- Wait several minutes or hours
- Retry the deployment again
- The deployment may succeed automatically once hardware becomes available
2. Contact Softdrive Support
If the issue continues occurring after multiple retries, contact Softdrive Support for assistance.
The Softdrive team can:
- Check current OCI capacity status
- Review regional availability
- Validate requested instance shapes
- Assist with alternative deployment options if necessary

Validation / Expected Result
Once OCI capacity becomes available, the deployment completes successfully and the host is provisioned normally.
Troubleshooting Notes
- This issue is infrastructure-capacity related and not caused by client-side configuration
- The error is typically temporary
- Retrying later often resolves the issue
- Different OCI regions or Availability Domains may have different capacity availability
- Large or specialized instance shapes are more likely to encounter temporary shortages
Oracle continuously expands capacity to minimize these situations, but temporary shortages can occasionally occur in highly utilized regions.
Escalation
If the issue persists, contact Softdrive Support and include the following:
- Error code: Out of host capacity
- Date and time of occurrence
- OCI region and Availability Domain (if known)
- Requested instance shape
- Screenshot of the error message
- Description of any deployment changes attempted
