Softdrive Release Notes v4.9.0

New Features

Softstream: Okta and Cognito Single Sign-On for iOS and macOS

Users can now sign in to the iOS and macOS clients with Okta SSO or Cognito, in addition to the existing Microsoft SSO option.

Softstream: Connect via Private IP

The client can now connect to a virtual machine over its private IP (peer-to-peer) instead of always routing through the public path, when an organization has that setting enabled.

Softstream: Disable Right-Click in Sessions

Organizations can now disable right-click within a Softdrive session, retrieved from the same organization setting that controls copy/paste. This works across Windows and Linux sessions and gives administrators an additional way to restrict in-session behavior when needed.

Enhancements

Softstream: Clearer Provisioning Failure Diagnostics

Added detailed logging around CreateProcessAsUser startup failures, and the service no longer stops immediately after the first failure. This makes it easier to diagnose why a server process failed to start during provisioning.

Softstream: Simplified Standalone Computer Controls

The launcher no longer shows the troubleshoot and power-on action buttons for standalone computers, since those actions aren't available on that computer type. This keeps the available controls consistent with what actually works.

Softstream: Clearer Webcam-in-Use Messaging

When a webcam is already open exclusively by another application (such as Teams or Zoom), the client now shows a clear message explaining that the camera is in use, instead of leaving users without an explanation for why their camera won't start.

Softstream: Linux Server Availability

The Linux Server package (.deb, Ubuntu 24.04) is release-ready again, with imaging and input verified between Windows and Linux clients connecting to a Linux Server

Bug Fixes

Softstream: Monitor Topology Change Crash

Fixed a client crash that occurred when no screen was available during a monitor topology change, such as when a display is disconnected mid-session.

Softstream: Microphone Driver Crash

Fixed a crash caused by the SoftdriveMicrophone.sys driver that could also leave the machine in an authentication-failed state afterward, requiring a manual restart to recover.

Softstream: 4:4:4 Chroma Subsampling Decode Failure (Error Code 6)

Fixed a client-side video decoding issue tied to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling that was causing repeated Error Code 6 disconnects on certain resolutions and hardware.

Softstream: macOS and iOS Relay Connection Failures

Fixed an issue preventing macOS and iOS clients from connecting through the relay path, which could leave affected users unable to connect at all when a direct connection wasn't available.

Softstream: Error Guide Link on macOS and iOS

Fixed the Error Guide link under Settings on macOS and iOS, which previously pointed to the wrong page instead of the troubleshooting article.

Softstream: NAT State Detection

Fixed an issue where NAT state could be detected incorrectly during the server's STUN process, a source of intermittent connectivity problems that were difficult to reproduce consistently.

Softstream: Launcher MFA Phone Number Setup

Fixed an issue on Linux and Windows where adding a phone number for multi-factor authentication failed for newly created users.

Softstream: Virtual Webcam Recovery

Fixed an issue where the server couldn't recreate the virtual webcam when its driver was already installed, which previously required manually removing and reinstalling the driver to recover.

Softstream: CPU Usage on CPU-Only VMs

Reduced CPU usage on CPU-only virtual machines by improving GDI desktop duplication, pixel format conversion, and encoding behavior.

Softstream: Audio Quality Improvements

Added experimental audio loss concealment to reduce audio artifacts and further improve call quality during a session.

Known Issues

Softstream: Blank Screen on macOS CPU-Only VMs

Setting chroma subsampling to 4:4:4 can result in a blank screen on macOS CPU-only VMs. This is being actively investigated.

Softstream: Cursor Visibility in Office 365 Apps

The mouse cursor can disappear or appear fuzzy in Word on Windows, with similar behavior reported in Excel.

Softstream: Camera Error During Mid-Call Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting a VM while a call with the camera active is in progress can show a "camera failed" error; reopening the app restores the camera.

Softstream: Keyboard Unresponsive After VM Lock and Hotkey Quit

Locking a VM and then quitting Softdrive with the Ctrl+Shift+Q hotkey can leave the keyboard unresponsive on the lock screen.
