Softdrive Multi-Monitor Issues | Remote Resolution and Monitor Setup Troubleshooting

Overview

This article explains how to troubleshoot multi-monitor issues in Softdrive, including cases where additional monitors cannot be enabled, the monitor layout does not update correctly, or the Monitors menu is unavailable.

Softdrive uses the local computer monitor configuration to determine the available displays. If Remote Resolution is configured with a fixed resolution instead of Mirror Local PC, Softstream disables multi-monitor controls and prevents the user from enabling all monitors.

Monitor issues can also occur when reconnecting to a Softdrive session from a different location, docking station, or physical monitor configuration. In these cases, the Softdrive session may retain the previous display layout and require a manual refresh.

Quick Check

If the Monitors menu is disabled, unavailable, or the user cannot enable all monitors, first verify:

Remote Resolution → Mirror Local PC

Applies To

  • Softstream Client
  • Softdrive Virtual Desktops
  • Windows 10 / Windows 11 guest operating systems
  • Users with multiple monitors
  • Users reconnecting from different locations or monitor configurations
  • Users who manually configured Remote Resolution

Symptoms

  • One or more monitors do not display correctly after reconnecting
  • The monitor arrangement does not match the current physical setup
  • A secondary monitor appears in the wrong position
  • The desktop does not extend properly across all monitors
  • The issue appears after changing locations, docking stations, or monitor setups
  • The Monitors menu is disabled or unavailable
  • The user cannot select Show All or enable additional monitors
  • Softstream indicates that resolution changes are only available in single-monitor mode

Possible Causes

  • The previous monitor layout was retained from another location
  • The local workstation is using a different monitor count, resolution, or scaling configuration
  • Windows Display Settings inside the Softdrive session did not refresh automatically
  • Docking stations or display adapters changed monitor order
  • Remote Resolution is configured with a fixed resolution instead of Mirror Local PC
  • A fixed Remote Resolution forces the session into single-monitor mode and disables the Monitors menu

Resolution

Follow the steps below in order. Start by verifying the Softstream Remote Resolution setting before making changes inside Windows.

Important

If Remote Resolution is set to a fixed resolution such as 1920 x 1080, 2560 x 1440, 3840 x 2160, or another manually selected value, Softstream will operate in single-monitor mode.

To use multiple monitors, Remote Resolution must be set to:

Mirror Local PC

Step 1: Verify Remote Resolution

  • While connected to the Softdrive session, open the Softdrive Overlay Menu.
  • Select:
    Remote Resolution
  • Check which resolution option is currently selected.
  • If a fixed resolution is selected, change it to:
    Mirror Local PC
  • Wait several seconds for the display configuration to refresh.
  • Open the overlay menu again.
  • Verify that the Monitors menu is now available.

If the Monitors menu is now available, continue with Step 2.

Step 2: Reset the Softstream Monitor Configuration

  • Open the Softdrive Overlay Menu.
  • Navigate to:
    Monitors → Single Monitor
  • Wait approximately 5–10 seconds for the display layout to refresh.
  • Open the overlay menu again.
  • Navigate to:
    Monitors → Show All
  • Wait for Softstream to detect and initialize the available monitors.
  • Verify that all monitors are now active.
Expected Behavior

After switching to Single Monitor and then back to Show All, Softstream refreshes the monitor configuration using the current local computer display setup.

Step 3: Refresh Windows Display Settings

If all monitors are enabled but the layout is still incorrect, refresh the Windows display configuration inside the Softdrive session.

  • Inside the Softdrive desktop, right-click the desktop and select:
    Display Settings
  • Under:
    Scale & Layout
change the display resolution to another supported value.
  • When prompted, select:
    Keep changes
  • If the mouse pointer becomes misaligned and you cannot click Keep changes, press:
    Tab
    until the option is selected.
  • Press:
    Enter
  • Verify that Windows refreshes the monitor layout.

Step 4: Manually Rearrange Monitors

If all monitors are active but their position does not match the physical monitor setup:

  • Inside the Softdrive desktop, open:
    Display Settings
  • Under:
    Rearrange your displays
    select:
    Identify
  • Windows will display a number on each monitor.
  • Drag the monitor boxes so they match the physical monitor arrangement.
  • Click:
    Apply
  • If prompted, select:
    Keep changes
  • If the cursor is misaligned, use Tab and Enter to confirm the change.

Step 5: Reconnect the Session

If the changes do not apply immediately:

  • Disconnect from the Softdrive session.
  • Confirm that the local computer detects all monitors correctly.
  • Reconnect to Softdrive.
  • Open the Softdrive Overlay Menu.
  • Confirm:
Remote Resolution → Mirror Local PC
  • Confirm:
    Monitors → Show All

Expected Result

The Softdrive session detects the available monitors from the local computer and initializes the display configuration correctly.

The following should be true:

  • Remote Resolution is set to Mirror Local PC
  • The Monitors menu is available
  • Show All can be selected
  • All connected monitors appear inside the Softdrive session
  • The monitor arrangement matches the user's physical monitor layout

Troubleshooting

  • If the Monitors menu is disabled, verify that Remote Resolution is set to Mirror Local PC
  • Do not use a fixed Remote Resolution when attempting to use multiple monitors
  • Verify all monitors are detected correctly on the local computer before connecting to Softdrive
  • Confirm that Windows is configured to extend the desktop across the required monitors
  • Check whether monitor resolution or scaling changed between locations
  • Reconnect docking stations, USB display adapters, or monitor cables if applicable
  • Use Single Monitor followed by Show All to force Softstream to refresh the display configuration
  • Disconnect and reconnect to the Softdrive session if changes do not apply immediately
  • Restart the Softdrive Launcher if display synchronization fails
  • If the issue persists, reboot the Softdrive VM and reconnect
Note

For multi-monitor sessions, Softdrive should normally mirror the monitor configuration of the local computer. Avoid manually forcing a Remote Resolution unless single-monitor operation is specifically required.
