Keyboard Symbols Are Reversed or Incorrect in Softdrive

Overview

Some users may notice that certain keyboard symbols, such as ' and ", appear reversed or typed incorrectly while working inside Softdrive.

This usually happens when the keyboard layout inside the Softdrive virtual machine does not match the keyboard layout on the user’s physical computer.

Common Cause

This issue is commonly caused by a mismatch between the keyboard layout on the local computer and the keyboard layout inside the Softdrive virtual machine.

For example, the user’s physical computer may be using a UK, Norwegian, or other regional keyboard layout, while the Softdrive VM is configured with a US English keyboard layout.

Procedure

  1. Inside the Softdrive VM, open Settings.
  2. Go to Time & Language.
  3. Select Language & Region.
  4. Review the installed keyboard layout.
  5. Press Windows + Space to check if multiple keyboard layouts are available.
  6. Remove any unnecessary keyboard layouts and keep only the layout that matches the user’s physical keyboard.

Recommended Keyboard Layouts

  • US keyboard: English (United States) - US
  • UK keyboard: English (United Kingdom) - United Kingdom
  • Norwegian keyboard: Norwegian - Norwegian

Expected Result

After the keyboard layout inside the Softdrive VM matches the user’s physical keyboard, symbols such as ' and " should type correctly.

Troubleshooting

If the issue continues, please collect the following information:

  • Screenshot of the keyboard layout inside the Softdrive VM
  • Screenshot of the keyboard layout on the local computer
  • Whether the issue happens in all applications or only in Revit
  • The exact symbols that are being typed incorrectly
  • Whether multiple keyboard layouts appear when pressing Windows + Space

If the issue only happens inside Softdrive and not on the physical laptop, this usually confirms that the problem is related to the keyboard layout inside the VM or how the VM is interpreting keyboard input.
