Overview
This article provides troubleshooting steps for camera or webcam issues when using applications such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other video conferencing applications inside a Softdrive session.
Softdrive redirects the webcam connected to your local computer into the Softdrive virtual desktop. If the local camera is unavailable, already being used by another application, or the incorrect camera is selected inside the conferencing application, video may not be available.
Applies To
- Softdrive Client
- Softstream sessions
- Microsoft Teams
- Zoom
- Windows Camera
- Other applications that use a webcam or camera
Symptoms
You may experience one or more of the following:
- The camera does not appear in Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
- The camera is listed but does not display video.
- The application reports that no camera is available.
- A black screen appears instead of the camera image.
- The Softdrive or redirected webcam is missing from the list of available cameras.
- The Windows Camera application reports that it cannot find the camera.
- The camera works locally but does not work inside the Softdrive session.
Possible Causes
- The camera is not working correctly on the local computer.
- Another local application is already using the camera.
- The incorrect camera is selected in Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
- Multiple physical or virtual cameras are installed.
- The camera was connected or activated after the Softdrive session was established.
- Windows camera privacy permissions are preventing the application from accessing the webcam.
- The Softdrive webcam redirection device did not initialize correctly when the session connected.
Troubleshooting Procedure
Step 1 - Confirm the Camera Works on the Local Computer
Before troubleshooting Softdrive, verify that the physical webcam works normally on your local computer.
- Disconnect from your Softdrive session.
- Open the Windows Camera application on your local computer.
- Confirm that you can see video from the camera.
If the camera does not work on the local computer, the issue should be resolved locally before troubleshooting camera redirection through Softdrive.
Step 2 - Close Applications Using the Camera
While disconnected from Softdrive, make sure the webcam is not currently being used by another application.
Close applications such as:
- Microsoft Teams
- Zoom
- Windows Camera
- Google Meet or other browser-based conferencing applications
- Any other application that may be accessing the webcam
Some webcams may not be available for redirection if another application on the local computer already has control of the device.
Step 3 - Reconnect to Softdrive
- After closing any applications using the camera, reconnect to your Softdrive session.
- Allow the Softdrive session to finish connecting completely.
- Open the conferencing application you want to use.
Step 4 - Check the Camera in Zoom
- Open Zoom.
- Go to Settings > Video.
- Locate the Camera drop-down menu.
- Confirm that the Softdrive webcam, redirected webcam, or equivalent redirected camera is selected.
- Confirm that video appears in the preview window.
If multiple cameras are listed, select each available camera one at a time and confirm whether one of them provides video.
Step 5 - Check the Camera in Microsoft Teams
- Open Microsoft Teams.
- Go to Settings > Devices.
- Locate the Camera section.
- Select the Softdrive webcam, redirected webcam, or equivalent redirected camera.
- Confirm that the camera preview displays video.
If multiple cameras are available, test each camera listed in Teams.
Step 6 - Test the Camera Inside the Softdrive Session
You can also use the Windows Camera application inside the Softdrive virtual desktop to determine whether the redirected webcam is available to Windows.
- Inside the Softdrive session, open the Windows Camera application.
- Confirm whether the redirected webcam provides video.
If the camera works in the Windows Camera application but does not work in Teams or Zoom, the issue is most likely related to the camera selection or configuration within that application.
Step 7 - Check Windows Camera Permissions
If the camera is detected but applications cannot access it, verify the Windows camera privacy settings.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security > Camera.
- Confirm that Camera access is enabled.
- Confirm that Let apps access your camera is enabled.
- Confirm that Let desktop apps access your camera is enabled.
Step 8 - Reconnect the Softdrive Session
If the camera is still unavailable:
- Close Teams, Zoom, and other applications using the webcam.
- Disconnect completely from the Softdrive session.
- Confirm again that no local application is using the camera.
- Reconnect to Softdrive.
- Open the application again and verify the selected camera.
Connect and enable the webcam before establishing your Softdrive session. Avoid opening the same webcam simultaneously in applications running both locally and inside Softdrive.
Expected Result
The Softdrive or redirected webcam should appear as an available camera inside Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Windows Camera, and other supported applications, and the camera preview should display video normally.
If the Camera Is Still Not Working
If the camera works correctly on the local computer but the Softdrive/redirected webcam is missing or does not work inside the Softdrive session after completing the troubleshooting steps above, please contact the Softdrive Support Team.
When contacting Support, please provide the following information when possible:
- Name of the affected user
