Overview
Softdrive fleets allow administrators to control how long a VM can remain inactive before the session is automatically disconnected or the machine powers off. These timers help optimize resource usage across shared non-persistent environments.
This guide walks you through configuring the two inactivity timers available in Softdrive fleets.
- Idle disconnect timer – How long the user can be inactive before the session disconnects.
- Idle power-off timer – How long the VM remains inactive before it automatically shuts down.
Prerequisites
- You must be logged into the Softnet Dashboard.
- You must have administrator permissions on the fleet you want to configure.

Content
1) Accessing Your Fleet
- Log in to your Softdrive Dashboard.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click More.
- Select Fleets.
- Locate the fleet you want to configure and click its name.
You will now see the fleet overview panel, including Template, Performance Tier, Users, Computers, and Configuration.

2) Editing Your Fleet Configuration
- In the fleet overview, click the Configuration box.
- A configuration window will open.

3) Setting Inactivity Timers
Inside the configuration window, you will see two dropdowns under Inactivity timers.
Idle disconnect timer
This setting determines how long a user session can be inactive before Softdrive disconnects the session but keeps the VM running.
Select an option from the dropdown list:

This is ideal for shared environments where you want to quickly free active sessions but don’t want to shut down the VM.
Idle power-off timer
This timer determines how long the VM can remain idle before it automatically powers off.
- The user session must be disconnected before this timer begins.
- Used to free compute resources and ensure the non-persistent VM resets to the base template.
Select an option from the dropdown list:

4) How to Apply the Settings
- Select the desired values for both timers.
- Click Update configuration.
- Close the configuration window.
Softdrive will now enforce these timers on all non-persistent machines in this fleet.
Behavior Summary
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| User idle exceeds Idle Disconnect Timer | Session disconnects, VM stays powered on |
| User idle exceeds Idle Power-off Timer | VM automatically shuts down and resets to original state |
| User reconnects after VM is powered off | A new fleet session is created |
| VM is rebooted from the Windows OS | VM maintains its current state |
| VM is rebooted from the Softnet Dashboard | VM maintains its current state |
| VM is powered off from the Windows OS | VM will reset to original templated state when powered on |
| VM is powered off from the Softnet Dashboard | VM will reset to original templated state when powered on |
Notes
- Changing timers affects all computers inside the fleet.
- Timers help maintain performance in shared pools by ensuring VM resources are not held by inactive users.
